Mailchimp Review
Last Updated: August 2026
Quick verdict: Mailchimp is a solid choice if you want brand recognition, a large template library, and AI content tools — and you're willing to pay more for them. If you mainly want affordable automation, our MailerLite review or Moosend review are worth reading first.
Mailchimp is one of the best-known email marketing platforms, combining email campaigns, automation, landing pages, and reporting in a single tool. Owned by Intuit since 2021, it's often the first name people recognize when they think of email marketing software. If you're comparing options, our MailerLite review and ActiveCampaign review can help you see how it stacks up.
Mailchimp prices by contact count, and pricing has changed twice already in 2026 — the free plan was cut in January, and legacy-plan users saw an 11–13% price increase in April. It still offers a wide integration library, a large template collection, and generative AI content tools on its higher tiers, but it's rarely the cheapest option at any given list size. For a full pricing breakdown across platforms, see our cheapest email marketing software guide.
Mailchimp bundles a lot into one platform. Here's what stands out — and where it's more limited than it first appears.
Build campaigns with a drag-and-drop editor and choose from 100+ pre-built templates. Custom-coded templates can be created on every plan, but you need Essentials or higher to actually send them.
Essentials includes up to 4 automation flow steps. Standard and Premium unlock full multi-step journeys with branching logic, up to 200 flow points, for welcome series, abandoned cart, and re-engagement campaigns.
Standard and Premium plans include AI-assisted writing and design tools plus predictive, behavior-based segmentation — useful if you want a head start on copy and audience targeting.
Track opens, clicks, and revenue attribution on every plan. Custom reports and dynamic content are reserved for Standard and Premium — a real gap if you're on Essentials and want deeper insight. See our best email marketing software guide for how this compares across platforms.
Connects with Shopify, WooCommerce, Squarespace, Zapier, and hundreds more. This is one of Mailchimp's genuine strengths — few competitors match the sheer breadth of the integration directory.
Build signup forms and landing pages to grow your list without extra tools. Popup forms are included on every plan, including Free.
100+ templates and 300+ integrations — genuinely one of the widest ecosystems of any platform we've reviewed.
AI writing, design assistance, and predictive segmentation are included on Standard and Premium at no extra cost.
Widely known name that clients, stakeholders, and new hires are often already familiar with.
Essentials and Standard include 24/7 email and chat support; Premium adds phone support.
Free plan has zero automation. Compare that with MailerLite's free plan, which includes it.
Unsubscribed and non-subscribed contacts still count toward your plan limit unless you manually archive or delete them.
The free plan shrank to 250 contacts in January 2026, and legacy users saw an 11–13% price increase in April 2026.
At comparable list sizes, MailerLite, Moosend, and Brevo generally cost less for similar or better automation.

Prices shown are the "starting at" tier for the listed contact count and rise as your list grows. Standard and Essentials include a 14-day free trial. Nonprofits can request a 15% discount. Source: mailchimp.com/pricing, verified August 2026.
Mailchimp's editor is polished, but the dashboard has grown more crowded as Intuit has added AI tools, SMS, and reporting features over the years. Beginners can build a first campaign without much trouble, but the sheer number of menus and settings makes it feel less immediately intuitive than MailerLite. Standard and Premium plans include personalized onboarding sessions, which help offset the learning curve.
Automation is Mailchimp's weakest tier-for-tier value. The Free plan has none at all. Essentials caps you at 4 flow steps — enough for a basic welcome email, not much more. Real automation, with branching logic and up to 200 flow points, only unlocks on Standard ($20/month and up). By contrast, MailerLite includes automation on its free plan, and Moosend and ActiveCampaign both offer stronger automation per dollar at the entry level.
Mailchimp offers 100+ pre-built templates plus a drag-and-drop editor, and it's one of the few platforms where you can create custom-coded templates on every plan. The catch: Free and Essentials users can only create custom-coded templates, not send them — sending requires Standard or Premium.
Mailchimp has a long operating history and large sending infrastructure, and most user reports describe deliverability as solid when lists are kept clean. As with any platform, actual inbox placement depends heavily on your own list hygiene and sending practices — we don't have independently verified deliverability benchmarks to cite, so treat any specific inbox-rate claim (from any vendor) with some skepticism.
This is a genuine strength. Mailchimp's directory lists 300+ integrations, including Shopify, WooCommerce, Squarespace, Salesforce, and Zapier. If your stack depends on niche or less-common tools, Mailchimp is more likely to already have a native connection than smaller competitors.
Support scales with your plan. Free users get email support for their first 30 days only. Essentials and Standard include 24/7 email and chat support. Premium adds phone support and a dedicated onboarding specialist. If ongoing support matters to you on a budget, that Free-plan limit is worth knowing about upfront.

If you're new to email marketing and want automation without paying for it, MailerLite's free plan (250 subscribers) beats Mailchimp's free plan outright — it actually includes automation.
Read MailerLite ReviewMoosend's paid plans start lower than Mailchimp's and include unlimited monthly emails plus strong automation. A good pick if cost-per-feature is your priority.
Read Moosend ReviewBrevo bundles email, SMS, WhatsApp, and a built-in CRM, and prices by emails sent rather than contacts stored — worth a look if Mailchimp's per-contact billing bothers you.
Read Brevo ReviewIf Mailchimp's automation feels limited even on Standard, ActiveCampaign's workflow builder and built-in CRM are built for teams that live inside complex, multi-step customer journeys.

Common questions about Mailchimp answered.
Mailchimp is worth it for a specific type of user — not for everyone. If brand recognition, a large template and integration library, and AI-assisted content tools matter to you, and budget is a secondary concern, Mailchimp delivers a mature, capable platform.
But for most solopreneurs, small businesses, and beginners, Mailchimp is no longer the easy default it once was. The free plan has shrunk twice in recent memory and includes no automation at all, and pricing on paid plans has been rising — including a real hike for legacy users in April 2026. At comparable list sizes, MailerLite and Moosend both generally cost less and include more automation on their entry tiers.
Our honest take: try Mailchimp if the brand name and integration breadth genuinely matter for your business. Otherwise, it's worth comparing pricing and automation against the alternatives above before committing — you'll likely find a better fit for less.
Bottom line: Mailchimp is a safe, capable choice if you value its brand and ecosystem and don't mind paying more for it. If you're optimizing for cost or free-tier automation, start with MailerLite or Moosend instead.
